Michael Jackson Moonwalk Blog-Based Flash Mob, GO!

425.jackson.thriller.051408I wasn’t going to post about Michael Jackson’s death, because, frankly, it hit me extremely hard, and I’ve been sort of taken aback by that.  Even worse, while I’ve been grieving for the loss of the man who first made me love music — and I mean LOVE MUSIC! — I’ve been forced to encounter over and over the crass comments of assholes everywhere who seem to think it’s funny and/or good he’s dead.

And so, for that reason, I’m STILL not really going to post about Michael Jackson’s death.  And I would appreciate it if the only comments left here are comments of respect and remembrance, and not dickishness.  Thanks.

However, I just put up a status update on Facebook encouraging everybody who sees it to immediately drop what they’re doing and MOONWALK wherever they are.  Without shame!  And I want you guys in on the action! Facebook/Blog FLASH MOB is a GO!

Here’s what I want you to do:  the minute you see this post — the very minute! —  jump up and doo the Moonwalk.  I don’t care where you are — in your office, in the street, checking your iPhone in the supermarket. If you’re embarrassed, go in the bathroom and lock the door.  It doesn’t matter.

Just go do it!  Everybody!!  Then post in comments below where you were when you busted out your moves, and whether the act of doing it made you laugh with immeasurable joy.  Because that is what Michael Jackson used to do for me every time I saw him dance.

Peace out, MJ.  YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE and I hope wherever you end up next, it will be a happier place for you.

p.s. Need a refresher on the Moonwalk?  YouTube is your friend.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7MmEMrCRfc

You are so brave, my dear! I’m SO glad I didn’t succomb to the temptation to make a dumb joke! I’ve never been a big Michael Jackson fan, but, damn, he was a force to be reckoned with in the ’80’s. I feel like I don’t have to be a big fan to respect the work he did, and the innovations he created to feel bad for how much of a target he became. I really do wish he had had the time to come through all that crap!

Thanks, Liz — that was a perfect comment. Now, GO MOONWALK. JUST ONCE!!

i just moonwalked in front of my cats. they didn’t appreciate it. maybe because it wasn’t that great of a moonwalk.

    r.i.p, MJ

I just got my 15 yr old niece and 13 yr old nephew hooked on Michael Jackson’s music about 6 months ago. What a unique and timeless artist he was…..and, uh, my husband just looked at me funny and asked what the heck I was doing. Apparently the finished product looked nothing like the moonwalk!

PS. Also a loooooong time lurker

Like everyone in the sixth grade at the time, I thought Thriller was the awesomest thing ever. I have a vague memory of watching some awards show or special and witnessing the moonwalk for the first time. I immediately wanted to try it myself. MJ made it look so easy. I loved the 80s Michael and hoped that most of what we heard later wasn’t true. And now I must moonwalk into the kitchen to make dinner.

in the entryway of the house i’m housesitting in westmount, montreal, quebec, canada. yes, did make me laugh. (i sucked at it so bad, but it was fun to do.) thanks for the plan! hugs!

I just tried to do it on carpet…the results were not so good:( But my teen-ager laughed long and hard so it was totally worth it.

  8. Sandy Says:

I just did a little celebratory moonwalk here, in my home office, watching Good Morning America (in Winnipeg, Manitoba). Nearly tripped over the dog and I am completely and totally going to be late for work.

I love you MJ! And I wish I still had the yellow Michael Jackson t-shirt I wore to the first day of grade 8 in a new school (I was very brave).

I love you too Meg! I stumbled upon your Boyfriend of the Week site, about one hundred years ago when googling about Colin Mochrie. Yes, I too am a loooong time lurker!

  9. megwood Says:

Awesome, Sandy!! Thanks for delurking long enough to make me laugh! 🙂

IF ANYONE MISSED THE TRIBUTE/MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR M.J., IT’S ALREADY UP ON “YOU TUBE.” We had such bad weather in CT that one station broke in to the broadcast, to warn us about rain and hail (the thunder was a dead give-away)!

knew of any message boards that cover the same topics discussed here?
I’d really like to be a part of community where I can get suggestions from other knowledgeable people that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Bless you!
