I thought it was funny in the style of Leonard. But the slow-mo beating had me twisting in my seat.

Elmore Leonard, you mean? I don’t really see the comparison, myself (though I was so bored after the first 40 minutes I confess I wasn’t playing close attention anymore). I don’t remember anything being particularly funny, even darkly so, and it definitely didn’t seem to have a purpose/point of any sort, which is something I do think of when I think of Leonard’s stories. I think they were trying to show that even the mob has been hit by the recession — perhaps we were meant to find that darkly comic? But if it hadn’t been for the fact CNN was playing in the background of every bar they went into, I wouldn’t have picked up on that as a theme at all. Which is bad writing extraordinaire, if you ask me — talk about telling not showing! I’m curious about the novel, now, though, especially since I gather it was written in the 1970s and so if it had a political theme, it’ll be a different one. Have you read the novel? I’m wondering if it has a little more meat and meaning to it.
