Yes! Karl Urban! I really do have to agree with you on all points 1) acting, not so much…check 2) Film catalogue heavily weighted with hunky, scowling characters…check 3) Annoying Bones….check. Still, I’m definitely up for the new Star Trek(s) when they come out.
I did see “Price of Milk” though back when LOTR first came out and I fell madly into love with Karl. Netflix has it. It was pretty much as advertised “quirky” is as good as any word, but I don’t remember being amazed at his range of acting, only by the appearance of his pretty damn attractive naked bum. Oh, and puzzled by the dog-in-a-box which isn’t as morbid and creepifying as it sounds.

“(Pause here a moment, close your eyes, and try to picture Daniel Craig with Eomer hair. See how long you can go without laughing. I lasted 4.2 seconds before: snicker, snort.)” — Pretty sure I only made it about 0.87 seconds before I snorted.

Can’t act? CAN’T ACT? Oh dude. Dude. I love you, but DUDE. You’re killing me here.

I first fell in lust with Karl Urban in Doom (I know, I know, just go ahead and shoot me now), then realised I’d also seen him in Chronicles of Riddick. Growly American accent and frowny-face? Check and check.
I did enjoy his scenery-chewing as Bones, though. He was so over-the-top it was hilarious! At least we know what to expect in the new Star Trek (CANNOT. WAIT.)

Dredd. O….kay.
Do you suppose that this time they’ll get a scriptwriter who realises that Judge Dredd isn’t meant to be a sympathetic character?

he is def. one of those “actors” that looks good (I’m partial to the long hair), but is a really, really bad actor. but you are right, that hasn’t hurt other hunky men in movies

I love how you interrupted your own writeup for the conversation with Hollywood. (Because, really? REALLY? Dredd?!?) I don’t really care one way or another about Mr. Urban but I did watch Red pretty recently, and he did seem rather constipated throughout. So…yeah, there ya go.

First, I love how Hollywood uses the word Frak! 🙂
Second, Love Paul Bettney, but Priest sounds an awful like an anime called trinity blood which is a good anime, highly suggest it.
Third, I’ve watched Dead Ship a few times and I’m not quite sure why either because I don’t like the movie either LOL

I might be a little biased here because the Two Towers is my fave of the 3 LOTR movies; but my vote is the long hair-definitely the long hair!

It’s fun to finally read another BOTW about a “hunk” – I don’t think you’ve done one in a while. HOWEVER, my husband and I loved Urban in “Star Trek!” The thing is, DeForest Kelly (the original Bones) was an actor in old-time western movies, and HE sort of hammed it up, too. So I think Urban did a GREAT job in capturing his style and voice.
I also so RED (more fluffy than I had expected), and saw Urban’s name in the credits – but I never recognized him at all! I was also fascinated that he had played Eomer (again, didn’t recognize him), and I don’t remember thinking he was bad there, either – just that he hadn’t been given very much to do! Let’s hope he’s a “diamond-in-the-rough” (no, I didn’t say “buff!”), and will find a niche. I do agree he is sort of Harrison Ford-like.

Glad everybody is enjoying this one! Planning on renting Doom and Riddick today, by the way — thanks for the suggestions!

What’s wrong with nerdy? I’m ok with you sticking with nerdy 🙂 He did what he needed to in LOTR. Nothing special. But I did like him as McCoy and thought that he captured the character perfectly. I want to see your nerdy selections, though.

Oh, believe you me, Lorraine — THE NERDS ARE COMING. I just felt like it was time for someone I’d gotten a lot of requests for and who was super hunky. Been a while!

See, I would have said his major American breakthrough was as Cupid in Xena, but that’s just me. Also, Riddick: yes. Don’t watch Pitch Black first, even though it IS the beginning, because it (IMHO) is a better movie and may negatively impact your ability to enjoy the utter camp that is Riddick. It’s just…. you….. the movie….. really, go watch and enjoy1

I’ve been sort of following Urban since Xena and Hercules where he played Cupid, Caesar, and some other characters. He was also in Riddick, Doom, Transporter 1, amongst other things. I think his performance in Priest may be the only thing to save the movie – if it can indeed be saved. Someone commented that it was like Trinity Blood but it Trinity Blood is better…than this movie (not the manga though) – honestly how they got from a Priest selling his soul so he can avenge his slain wife and take vengeance upon 12 fallen angels to some Priest taking on an army of vampires but all of the battles are one-on-one, in what’s supposed to be a pure western without the “1984” society I don’t know.
Considering the prior Judge Dredd with Stallone I would say yes it did need a reboot, however this new “Dredd” will not be associated with the old one in any way whatsoever beyond the title – just like this “Priest” has nothing to do with the actual “Priest” only the names are the same.
Paul Bettany for Priest literally did not change roles from when he was in Legion as Michael so if you want an example of bad acting there you go – Karl Urban’s performance is many leagues above that in addition to most actors these days.
