Live Blogging Act II of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

Since “live-blogging” seems to be all the rage these days (by which I mean “8 years ago”), I thought it was about time for me to get in on the action.

So now, for your entertainment, I will live-blog my viewing of Act II of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (http://drhorrible.com/act_II.html). (Numbers correspond to minutes:seconds in the video, as closely as I could get them.)

00:18 — Neil Patrick Harris does “pained expression” very well.

00:47 — Actually, he also sings very well. Combine the two and you’d have . . . whoa, there it is! Acting! Brilliant! Thank you.

1:00 — Those of you who said you found Felicia Day somewhat forgettable in Act I are going to say it again, only this time we’ll all know it’s out of JEALOUSY that she gets to eat soup with Capt. Tight (Hammer) Pants.

1:19 — Hee, he’s wearing his gloves to eat dinner. I don’t know why that’s funny but it is.

1:31 — God, look at that NOSE! I really can’t explain it, but, once again, the word “lickable” leaps right to mind. Is it wrong for a married woman to want to lick a single man’s nostrils? Or just gross? Or both? Wait, don’t answer that. Especially if the answer is, “Hey, Nathan Fillion isn’t single!”

1:46 — Pay attention to the soup guy(s) in the background.

2:05 — Harmony! Lovely! (No, not Harmony the vampire, harmony the vocals technique. Note: This is a clarification only Joss Whedon fans will require.)

2:12 — You know, I don’t actually care for geese myself, Capt. Tight (Hammer) Pants. That fro-yo sure looks good, though.

2:36 — I started to laugh out loud right here and had to stifle it because of where I was at the time.

3:09 — “I’m a fan of laundry”?? Yep, I hate her too. Except for the part where she eats her fro-yo with a spork — that part’s awesome.

5:00 — Ew. No kissing.

5:20 — “PhD in HORRIBLENESS” also made me laugh out loud and stifle. I need to watch Act III somewhere more appropriate, obviously.

6:27 — The Evil League of Evil isn’t really all that cool, Doog. I’ve been a member since 1974 and I’m telling you, our meetings are about as much fun as Mensa’s.

7:09 — I have the same shoes as Dr. Horrible! They’re even scuffed in the same places! But my legs don’t magically cross in opposite directions as the camera moves in and out of the shot — that’s how you KNOW he’s evil!

8:02 — One too many ballads for me already. You too? Fast-forward to 9:01.

9:01 — Oh thank god, she’s stopped singing.

9:30 — Love the Thunk! when Dr. H runs into Capt. THP. Nice touch!

10:11 — “Apparently the only signature he needed. . . was my fist! Um, but with a pen inside it. . .” Joss, have I told you lately that I love you?

10:43 — Profile of Nathan Fillion; more lickable nose-ness. Times infinity plus one.

11:20 — Whatever you do, do not take a sip of beverage at 11:19, because you’ll just end up guffawing it all over your keyboard at 11:20’s “I’m not the hammer, the hammer is my [omitting because this is a family site].” I’m sending Joss the electronics bill.

12:07 (Or thereabouts.) — Watch for the killer wedgie!

13:00 — Act III: Dr. Horrible Goes all Cloverfield on Their Arses!

The End.

So worth the $3.99 at iTunes, folks, even though every time I see the title, I get that “Mr. Horrible” song by They Might Be Giants stuck in my head.

Act III comes out on Saturday — don’t miss it!

I loved your “Harmony” joke! I think all the music is great – ballads too. But I still think Felicia Day is very forgettable. What is your thing about Nathan Fillion’s nose?? He’s funny (that “hammer” line was funny), but I like NPH better. But I don’t have any great desire to lick anyone’s nose! Maybe I’m just not cool enough. Oh well, I don’t care – I love this show.

  2. megwood Says:

I can’t explain my thing for his nose. If I could, I would. But Nathan Fillion’s ten times cuter AND funnier than NPH in my universe. NPH will always be dorky Doogie Howser to me no matter how many psychedelic drugs he takes on his way to White Castle.

    ๐Ÿ™‚

This is good though — we don’t have to share!

  3. Brie Says:

Thanks for your “live-blog viewing,” gave me some extra giggles along the way. I especially love your Cpt. THP, lol.

I fully concur on the wonderfulness of Nathan Fillion. He has been at the top of my list for some time now. (I don’t mind sharing though ๐Ÿ™‚ )

The man is so funny, and I am really enjoying the chance to see him play “big.” No subtlety necessary, I’m lovin’ it!

Unrelated: Before the show Drive premiered, I read a description of the show and it described NF’s character as a “rogue landscaper.” A friend of mine will occasionally refer to that to get a laugh out of me. Amazing what these ‘imaginary’ men do to lift my moods! Lol.

  4. Liz Says:

BUT … BUT … I thought we WERE sharing, Meg! Isn’t that what friends – even “cyber-friends” do? Share comments, opinions, etc. …. OH! I GET IT! You meant sharing Nathan Fillion, didn’t you?

I swear, I sat puzzling and puzzling over your comment for a good 10 minutes or so before I figured out what you meant! Is there a big “L” on my forhead? If I had just read Brie’s comment, I would have gotten it sooner, but NO! I had to reason it out MYSELF!

Not to worry – I agree that Nathan’s good, and funny, and cute, but I’ll always think of him as that uber-creepy clergyman in the last season of “Buffy.” He was WAY evil in that, and – I still think – a little TOO convincing! Besides, Neil Patrick Harris won me over when I heard him sing (and when I saw him in a movie with Whoopi Goldberg, BEFORE “Doogie Howser,” called “Clara’s Heart,” in which he was very good!) Besides, you’re going to have to duke it out with Brie and Lorraine, and God knows who else for him! If you ever wanted to share – say, Alan Rickman – then I would be willing to fight for him!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Eva Says:

hmm… I really enjoyed the first two acts, and yet somehow, I think the musical numbers mess it all up, which is hard to explain, since it’s a musical. I think the problem is that, other than the Bad Horse song, the songs pretty much play it straight. They aren’t weird and ironic, which is what Joss Whedon excels at.

Nathan Fillion seems to be channeling Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. Is he really that big a guy, or has he gotten bigger lately, or is NPH just not that big? NPH is funnier and cuter in this, but I have a permanent fondness for Malcolm Reynolds.

The girl is OK, not doing anything wrong – her part was just not written well. She’s not funny, as the songs aren’t funny, but then, she wasn’t meant to be. I think the tone is uneven throughout the whole piece, though I still come down on the side of liking it.

Am I the only one DYING for there to be a cameo from Alan Tudyk?? (Of course, I would like there to be cameos from Alan Tudyk in all film and television at all times.)

  6. megwood Says:

Since I always think musical numbers mess EVERYTHING up, I may not be the best to judge that phenomenon here.

Alan Tudyk — is he still slated to show up in a TV series next Fall? Something about lawyers?

  7. Lorraine Says:

Oh, so much to comment on! Meg – great live-blogging. Loved the “eating soup with gloves” and the “soup ladling”. Capt. Tight Hammer Pants ๐Ÿ™‚ Wow, a Harmony joke – you rule! I burst out laughing with the “hammer” joke also!

I also thought it dragged a bit when just “the girl” sang. Why is she so bland? I thought NPH was better than NF in this episode. I loved all his facial expressions and great singing, and stomping like Godzilla.

Eva – perfect analogy of Capt. TPH to Gaston! “No one wears incredibly tight pants like Gaston”!!!!

Actually, although I really like NF, I prefer any of the Firefly guys over him. I just love them ALL so much. The one that I would fight for is Jayne (Adam Baldwin).

  8. Liz Says:

I love Adam Baldwin, have followed him since “My Bodyguard” when he portrayed a JR. HIGH SCHOOL kid!), and started watching “Chuck” mainly because of him! I saw an episode of “Firefly,” and was excited to see him. Now you know the awful truth: I didn’t watch “Firefly” when it was on. I somehow thought it would make me unfaithful to “Buffy” and “Angel!” (which were my FAVORITEST shows since “Star Trek” – classic and TNG). I liked it, though, and will probably watch more episodes. (I don’t care about no stinkin’ “TV OCD” – I like trying to figure out the order of these annoyingly short-lived shows.)

I usually LOVE musical “interruptions,” and am a pretty big fan of musical theater; however, even I was bored and annoyed by that “extra” ballad by that dumb girl! She is so BLAH! But I don’t think it’s the writing; I think it’s the casting! Give me Amber Benson (Tara) or Emma Caulfield (Anya) any day! As a matter of fact, wouldn’t Sarah Michele Gellar herself have been great?

I had to look up Alan Tudyk on IMDb – he was in “Firefly,” too, wasn’t he? And it would have been so great to see Anthony Stewart Head! He was supposed to be in the movie of “Sweeney Todd,” but they cut that wonderful “Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” and I think he stayed in the movie for one uncredited line.

BTW – how can you say: “Ew, no kissing!” when you’re obsessed with licking noses?? ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. megwood Says:

It’s less the kissing itself, and more the kissing between Nathan Fillion and ANYONE ELSE BUT ME.

So, wait, have you not seen Firefly at all, then, Liz? Except for the one episode? What about Serenity (the movie)?

What ever happened to that plan to have Tony Head spin-off into his own series called “Ripper”? Does anybody know? I loved the idea!

  10. Liz Says:

I think I read that it just never happened. I would have loved it too. I get it about the kissing; do you get it about the sharing? I must confess, I thought my misunderstanding was kind of funny. I’m sorry – I’ve only seen the one episode of “Firefly.” I must be a defective Joss Whedon fan. It’s just that I resented anything that wasn’t “Buffy – related!” BTW, did you know that Tony Head is the brother of Murray Head, who was the ORIGINAL “Judas” in the concept album of “Jesus Christ, Superstar?” Okay, okay, so stuff like that interests me!

  11. Lorraine Says:

While I really liked both Buffy and Angel, I adored Firefly. Buffy was cool and Angel had Wesley. Wow, I loved Wesley’s combination of dorkiness, smartness, toughness, and wacky humor. But both Buffy and Angel had characters that annoyed me. But Firefly, I loved that entire cast. Even all the women were great (and you can’t say that about most tv casts). Each female was her own character, not just an extension of a male character.

Liz – you definitely must see all the Firefly episodes. I don’t think any of Adam Baldwin’s other roles come close to the wonderfulness of Jayne. Unfortunately, he tends to get cast in tough guy, rather one dimensional, roles. But Jayne has a many dimensions and some great humor.

  12. megwood Says:

Hee, Liz, yeah, I got a chuckle out of your “sharing” thing. You may share all the ideas, opinions, jokes, ridiculous one-liners, and anything else you can come up with here. At any time. Even if it has nothing to do with anything I said in an actual blog post. I’m all for non-sequiturs, as well you guys all know!

However, YOU MAY NOT SHARE NATHAN FILLION. Or his nose. The end.

Wow, amazing trivia about Tony Head’s brother. I actually have “Jesus Christ Superstar” on DVD, which typically surprises people who notice it on the shelf. But my husband LOVED that musical as a kid, and he still busts out into songs from it in public when he’s trying to embarrass me (which is often!), so I got him the DVD one year as a gift. I’ll have to watch it soon and see if I can see a resemblance. How on EARTH, did you know that??!

Also, Lizzie dear, if you email me with your snail mail address, I will plunk my Firefly DVDs in the mail for you next week. A loaner, of course. But seriuosly, dude, you can’t just NOT see the show. I can loan you the movie too (“Serenity”). Just let me know, yo!

  13. Liz Says:

Be careful of your DVD of “Superstar;” it may be of the movie they made, which features Carl Anderson as “Judas.” By that time, it had been staged, and the part was always played by an African American performer. As far as I know, Murray Head was the only Caucasian singer to do the part, and it was on the very first album. You can still find him on You Tube, though; boy, does it look dated now! I can’t claim any supernatural gift for trivia – it’s amazing what you can find out from IMDb (of course, you do have to recognize the names).

  14. megwood Says:

Oh, you’re right — it’s the movie version with Carl Anderson. I THOUGHT I remembered Judas as being an African American man in that! Will check out You Tube instead!

  15. Liz Says:

I am now trying to send you a link to You Tube for Murray Head, singing “Superstar” way back in 1970 or something! I don’t happen to think he looks like his brother at all!

  16. Liz Says:

The link worked! Yay! Oh, also – I saw Act III of “Dr. Horrible,” and it was very good – the ending wasn’t funny, but I did think it was effective. I know who would have been good for the dumb girl: Michelle Trachtenberg! She’s old enough now, and can sing, and for “Buffy” fans, it would have given us another reason to question the guys’ tastes – are they robbing the cradle?

  17. Liz Says:

AH, HAH! IMDb STRIKES AGAIN! I know I’ve been writing an awful lot of comments about “Dr. Horrible” – but I just loved it. And I’ve now found out where that “dumb girl” – played by Felicia Day – came from! She was a “Potential” on the final season of “Buffy,” named “Vi!” I even remember her now, and think that she said, as she looked down at the “uber-vamps”, and Willow’s spell began to work: “They’re toast!” She had been a timid girl, but then she “found herself!” I’m loving seeing a sort of “Joss Whedon Reperatory Co.” developing! I also have high hopes for more “Dr. Horrible” stories, as I think they’ve prepared the way for some interesting sequels. I hope there will be more, and I hope there will be some more interesting female characters. Hmmm. It seems as if Whedon either creates strong females, or strong males; I’d like to see something where we get both! … But I still doubt that I’ll be inspired to lick anyone’s nose!

  18. jo Says:

Is this the part where I get to annoy you again by mentioning casually in passing that I HAVE MET NATHAN FILLION? And he is even more charming and funny and attractive in person?

Felica Day wrote and stars in the youtube series The Guild.

    Totally worth a watch.

  19. megwood Says:

Nope, this is the part where you get to prompt me to exclaim loudly, “You met Nathan Fillion? WHERE IS MY AUTOGRAPHED PHOTO?!”

If you ever meet him again, please ask him to sign it, “Dear Meg, You can lick my nose any ol’ day of the week. Love, Nate.”

    Merci!!

  20. Eva Says:

OK, the ending makes up for anything I didn’t like about the show. I love shocker endings, especially when they feel so just-right that you realize “oh, gosh, I should have figured that was coming” – and still you’re glad that you didn’t. It had to end the way it did, but the rhythm was just right to keep me off track and keep me from realizing the ending in time.

I still think the girl part should have been written in a way to make her truly charming – we loved Kaylee for herself even though she snagged gorgeous Simon, for example. And we loved Zoe even though she took Wash off the market. I don’t think the fact that Boring Girl had both guys wrapped around her finger was the problem; it’s just that she was purposely written to be over-the-top perfect, perhaps so that we would hate her but then feel bad about it at the end, but even if that was the goal, I think it still didn’t really work.

But in the end, it didn’t end up mattering that much if I cared about her or not (though her “Captain Hammer will save us” did get to me) – the real heart of it is Dr. Horrible’s feelings, so it didn’t matter so much who he loved, just that he loved her. His face in the last shot – right on. If something this silly could still make me feel truly sad at the end, then I vote thumbs up.

I rather wish I knew what happened to Dr. Horrible next, but it’s probably all very bleak. *sigh*

  21. Lorraine Says:

Eva – nice summary about Kaylee/Simon and Zoe/Wash. I feel exactly the same way! I agree about “the girl part” in Dr. Horrible but I must concede that it is more difficult to have that complexity in a 15 minute story. She seemed to be getting a clue in Part 3 but then had that silly “Captain Hammer will save us” line. Maybe it was a from a loss of blood ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’d love more Dr. Horrible and Captain Tight Hammer Pants but I also doubt that we will see more. But it was fun!

  22. Lorraine Says:

Also, all this discussion just makes me miss Firefly even more. That was definitely one of my favorite casts on TV. Often I like a couple of the cast and tolerate the rest, but I loved all the Firefly regulars (with special love for Jayne).

  23. Melinda Says:

I would just to say ARGH!!! I missed watching this for free because my internet connection has mysteriously evaporated for reasons unknown (hence ‘mysteriously’)!!! But, I have faith that my movie-addict brother will purchase it when it comes out on DVD!!! Or I could just go ahead and buy them off iTunes…

Nathan Fillion is a permanent favorite in my little world, even though I’ve only really seen him in Firefly… or perhaps it is because I’ve only seen him in Firefly… anyway, that nose combined with that mouth with those eyes and the floppy hair *le sigh* If I weren’t in the middle of a MASSIVE crush on Richard Armitage, I might just start another one on the Cap!

  24. Barb Says:

I could never choose between Richard Armitage and Nathan Fillion…both feature frequently in my non-nose-licking fantasies.

I did love Dr. Horrible though and wish they would do more. I wasn’t a huge fan of Felicity Day but I love her in The Guild.

  25. Lorraine Says:

Nathan Fillion news – ABC is ramping up its police procedural ranks with two new cop dramas planned for midseason. The network picked up ABC Studios’ “Castleโ€ (starring Nathan Fillion as a horror novelist who helps the NYPD solve crimes).

Sounds like a cop procedural but Nathan should make it interesting ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. megwood Says:

Wow, I was just saying the other day we needed more crime shows that were like “Murder She Wrote,” and voila! Even more fun having him be a horror novelist. I’m sold already and this is the first I’ve heard of it!

    Woot!
